Has anyone successfully used the IC-730 for AMTOR? I can't get it
to work and I suspect that the switching time between TX and RX is
to slow. Would like to know if there is a modification that cures
this problem.

Subject: Kenwood TM-733A CTCSS (PL) tone too strong! Fix?
To: ham-equip@ucsd.edu
The transmitted PL tones on my Kenwood TM-733A are much to strong. I
get a signficant hum and buzz from most receivers, and my audio
reports usually mention it.
I called Kenwood, and they are aware of this problem. It seems they
set the PL tone amplitude too high, and they think they may have a
fix. Unfortunately, there is no trim-pot to adjust this, and the fix
requires sending the radio in for service. The tech mentioned that he
thought it was a resistor swap, but couldn't rember more.
I tried to call the Kenwood BBS to check for a service bulletin, but
it seems to be down (no answer). Has anyone seen a bulletin for this
PL problem? Last time I got through, there were no bulletins at all
for the 733.
If it's just changing a resistor (even SM), then I think I can manage
it myself and avoid a repair trip.
Anyone else run into this problem?

Ken, I think Steve's point is that most manufacturers *tout* xband and
*then* don't document. That's silly. In the case of the 733, Kenwood
prominently advertises xband repeat capability. If they're going to
advertise it, they really should document it. Ideally with instructions
on what to do *and* what not to do. And Steve's right. There's not a
peep to found anywhere in the (fairly thick... pun intended :-) manual.
I'd admit to being one of the 90% who'd probably do it wrong. Not
intentionally, but out of ignorance (and yes, I've got a copy of the
rules). I really don't think hiding advertised features in the radio is
the right way to address this problem.

My experience and the experience I have heard on the net has been exactly
opposite. The FT-470 has an *excellent* reputation. Primary complaints have
been regarding receiving interference when in high RF areas. But the same
complaint is valid for most if not all available dual band HT's.
Yaesu service has received generally good reviews on the net. Maybe not as
good as Icom's but pretty reasonable.
I'm not entirely disinterested as I have owned one for three years or so. I
don't have any complaints. In fact, as a result of owning this HT, I strongly
prefer Yaesu for VHF.

OK -- you have a valid point. Manufacturers shouldn't really be advertising
x-band repeat. Many radios are incapable of doing it legally and
those that make the radio shouldn't be advertising a "feature" which
results in illegal operation. Unfortunately, how to do it right
is somewhat specific to the location of operation, and we all know that
a few generalized instructions is worse than none at all (sort of
knowing just enough to be dangerous). My FT-530 manual just says
to "choose your frequency pair carefully." Great. What does that
mean? I agree -- they should stop advertising x-band repeat
causes more problems than it solves.
