  97. to work and I suspect that the switching time between TX and RX is

  116. The transmitted PL tones on my Kenwood TM-733A are much to strong.  I
  117. get a signficant hum and buzz from most receivers, and my audio
  118. reports usually mention it.
  119.  
  120. I called Kenwood, and they are aware of this problem.  It seems they
  121. set the PL tone amplitude too high, and they think they may have a
  122. fix.  Unfortunately, there is no trim-pot to adjust this, and the fix
  123. requires sending the radio in for service.  The tech mentioned that he
  124. thought it was a resistor swap, but couldn't rember more.
  125.  
  126. I tried to call the Kenwood BBS to check for a service bulletin, but
  127. it seems to be down (no answer).  Has anyone seen a bulletin for this
  128. PL problem?  Last time I got through, there were no bulletins at all
  129. for the 733.

  131. If it's just changing a resistor (even SM), then I think I can manage
  132. it myself and avoid a repair trip.

  164. advertise it, they really should document it.  Ideally with instructions
  165. on what to do *and* what not to do.  And Steve's right.  There's not a
  166. peep to found anywhere in the (fairly thick... pun intended :-) manual.

  168. I'd admit to being one of the 90% who'd probably do it wrong.  Not
  169. intentionally, but out of ignorance (and yes, I've got a copy of the
  170. rules).  I really don't think hiding advertised features in the radio is
  171. the right way to address this problem.

  253. My experience and the experience I have heard on the net has been exactly
  254. opposite.  The FT-470 has an *excellent* reputation.  Primary complaints have
  255. been regarding receiving interference when in high RF areas.  But the same
  256. complaint is valid for most if not all available dual band HT's.

  258. Yaesu service has received generally good reviews on the net.  Maybe not as
  259. good as Icom's but pretty reasonable.
  260.  
  261. I'm not entirely disinterested as I have owned one for three years or so.  I
  262. don't have any complaints.  In fact, as a result of owning this HT, I strongly
  263. prefer Yaesu for VHF.

  287. OK -- you have a valid point.  Manufacturers shouldn't really be advertising
  288. x-band repeat.  Many radios are incapable of doing it legally and
  289. those that make the radio shouldn't be advertising a "feature" which
  290. results in illegal operation.  Unfortunately, how to do it right
  291. is somewhat specific to the location of operation, and we all know that
  292. a few generalized instructions is worse than none at all (sort of
  293. knowing just enough to be dangerous).  My FT-530 manual just says
  294. to "choose your frequency pair carefully."  Great.  What does that
  295. mean?  I agree -- they should stop advertising x-band repeat
  296. causes more problems than it solves.
